“Many Ways Cooked Foods Can Be Contaminated,” Says FSSAI

It is often thought that only raw foods tend to cause foodborne illness. However, it should be noted that even cooked foods, if not stored properly, can lead to illness. Highlighting the same, the Government of India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently took to Twitter and shared this important fact about food safety and nutrition.


According to the FSSAI, it’s a myth that cooked foods can’t cause foodborne illness and can be stored at room temperature.

So what should be done?

Cooked foods can be contaminated in many ways, making them just as dangerous to eat. This can happen when:

* Food is not stored properly. All cooked foods or leftovers should be refrigerated (less than 5 degrees Celsius) within two hours
* Food is prepared on a contaminated surface or equipment or stored in a non-food grade utensil
* Food handlers do not practice good personal hygiene
* Cross-contamination with raw food

Foodborne illness can cause food poisoning, which manifests with symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, dehydration, and vomiting.

What should you do?

* Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before cooking and eating to avoid contracting illnesses. Considering the prevailing situation, it’s also a good idea to avoid eating out.
* Cover all food properly.
* Clean kitchen surfaces before and after preparing food.
* Avoid consuming raw foods. Harmful bacteria found in raw foods and vegetables can affect the stomach.

“Make sure you eat well-cooked and fresh foods to avoid food poisoning. Before cooking, wash anything you buy at the market. Also, be sure to wash the cauliflower, spinach and broccoli with salt water to flush out harmful bacteria, ”nutritionist Nmami Agarwal said.
