Jack’s Diner II Closes, Nine Pin Exploits Collaborations, and More

Pantry bringing back the barbecue battle for the fight against hunger

Shalom Food Pantry in Delmar will host its fourth annual Battle of BBQs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 25 at the Albany JCC, 340 Whitehall Road, Albany. Teams representing local Jewish organizations will provide all-you-can-eat grills and meals for attendees to taste and vote for awards. There will also be family activities, including a skateboard show.

Tickets, available online at shalomfoodpantry.org, are $ 25 until July 20, $ 30 after and at the door ($ 10 for children, free for children 5 and under).

Shalom pantry provides approximately 20,000 pounds of food each year to those in need.


Nine Pin collaborations coming this month

This week and later this month, Nine Pin Cider Works in Albany will begin offering draft beers made in collaboration with New York breweries.

As of Monday, Nine Pin has been offering Pin Pals from Community Beer Works in Buffalo. Description: “This apple witbier is brewed with NY wheat and mixed with NY apples.” The apples were pressed by the teams at Community Beer Works and Nine Pin Cider. The addition of juicy apples supports a crisp Belgian-style witbier. 5.8 percent blood alcohol level.

Starting July 26, Nine Pin will have 20 years of sleep from Rip Van Winkle Brewing to Catskill. Description: “This beer offers a balanced blend of a lager with New York ingredients and a refreshing dry cider. The process begins with a base of pilsner malt from the Hudson Valley, flaked wheat and lemony Tahoma hops from Chimney Bluffs Hoppery. During the refermentation, the apple juice normally reserved for the signature Nine Pin’s cider is pumped out. The mixture is fermented using Norwegian Kveik yeast, which brings its own fruit flavor. 6.5% blood alcohol level.

Bare Blends is growing rapidly

Naked mixes, a small local chain dedicated to healthy bowls, smoothies and juices that was co-founded three years ago by a then 22-year-old with a new degree in molecular biology and cell chemistry, recently opened its third location, and a fourth is slated for this summer.

The latest is at the Fresh Market Plaza in Latham, which was open for about a month in a space that previously housed Elevation Burger, according to an employee. The next Bare Blends is slated to open at Glenmont Plaza on Feura Bush Road in Glenmont. The other two can be found at Stuyvesant Plaza in Guilderland and Village Plaza in Clifton Park.
