Healthy, hassle-free samosa dough rolls for your chai-time cravings

Samosas are, without a doubt, one of the country’s favorite dishes. tea time snacks. The conical, fried, stuffed potato goodness is hard to beat when you’re craving something that not only satiates your hunger, but leaves you feeling satisfied. It is deceptively simple and one of the most popular foods in India.

If you are a real samoussa amateur, but cannot afford to spend time and effort preparing it, there is another way to enjoy samosa, albeit in a deconstructed and reimagined avatar.

This samosa roll recipe, shared by New York-based food content creator Chaheti, is a cheat recipe that uses the same filling as samosasbut instead of kneading, rolling out the dough, and frying it, you spread the filling on a sheet of store-bought puff pastry and bake it, much like cinnamon rolls.

-2 large golden potatoes, cooked and mashed
– 1 red onion, finely chopped
– 4 minced garlic cloves
– Small knob of grated ginger
– 2 finely chopped green chillies
– ½ cup of frozen peas
– ½ teaspoon of cumin seeds
– ¼ teaspoon of fennel seeds (optional)
– Pinch of hing (asafoetida) – optional
– ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder
– ¼ teaspoon red chili powder (black, kashmiri or paprika)
– ½ teaspoon of garam masala
– ½ teaspoon amchur (mango powder)
– Salt to taste
– 1 bunch of chopped cilantro
– Sheet of puff pastry, thawed in the refrigerator
– Egg wash (1 egg with a little water)


  1. In a hot skillet, add the oil, then the cumin and fennel seeds.
  2. Then add the onions, garlic, peppers and sauté for a minute.
  3. Add the turmeric, red chili powder, garam masala and salt, sautéing for a few minutes.
  4. Then add the peas and potatoes and cook for a few minutes.
  5. Garnish with mango powder. You can also replace it with lime or lemon, or add both. Garnish it with a little cilantro.
  6. Spread out on a large plate or tray and chill in the fridge for 20-30 mins. Alternatively, you can also prepare it in advance.
  7. Preheat your oven and roll out your puff pastry on a flour-dusted surface so it doesn’t stick.
  8. Quickly spread your filling mixture, leaving space around the edges to seal. Garnish with more cilantro.
  9. Gently begin to roll into a tight log.
  10. Optional – cover with plastic wrap and place in the freezer for 10-15 minutes to firm up for easier cutting and handling.
  11. Cut into approximately half-inch rolls. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15-20 mins until golden brown.
  12. You can also brush them with egg wash or melted butter for a shiny finish.
